In that talk, I took as a springboard for my reflections the fact that I had recently been encouraged by my pastor to leave the non-denominational evangelical church where my family and I had been attending for nearly two years. Instead, here in this two-part blog post, I want to offer a short and quite informal series of thoughts that I have about what I wish pastors knew about academics as they relate to us in the congregations that they serve.
One of the major trends within the community is the inclusion of electronic tracking systems into training. However, now since technology has began to improve and becoming more water proof. This means that wearable technology is starting to become more and more common.
This technology is starting to measure heart rate, stroke cadence, and distance off walls under water. This is just the start of technology within this community. The trend is to have more advance technology into this community such as power meters to measure the force a member is using while swimming.
This also shows a different trend as well. The new trend is a change from qualitative data into quantitative data. When I first joint this discourse community, almost everything was based upon qualitative observations.
Such as if you had a slow time, then a coach would look at how you were swimming and tell you what your doing wrong, such as you need to lift your elbow higher. Now however, with the introduction to technology into the community, it is becoming about quantitative data.
Now if you are not getting faster times, a coach can look at the exact numbers you are putting out such as how many breaths an athlete takes, then compare the numbers to the best in the world to best in the world to make the person faster.
Overall, with these two major trends, the discourse community of competitive swimming is starting to become, and will continue to become, much more scientific.Gilligan found that cultures—in this case, a professional occupation—create and maintain their own discourse communities with the result that they exclude individuals who have not mastered the hidden rules of such discourse.
